Sky Digibox won't turn back on
Hi Mark, I used to follow you in the Kilkenny Voice last year, funnily enough I found you again while searching google for Sky codes.
My question is, I was putting in some codes today for my sky box and it's after turning itself off and won't come back on, the standby light is red, but no matter what button I press it won't kick back into gear?
What can I do?

Hi Rach,
Does the Sky Box light just stay red once you remove the power and put it back in? It will take about 30 second before it will allow you to turn on.
One thing you could try if this is the case is to try and update the software, heres how to do this:
1- Remove from mains
2 - Hold down the back up button (on the box, not the remote)
3 - Plug back in mains while you have the backup button held, keep it held.
4 - You should see an "Updating Software" message
This should update the software to Sky's latest for your box, giving the box a good spring cleaning!
If this doesn't work get back to me and we can take it from there.

The USB ports on the Sky+ boxes have no use at the moment, they are there for "further expansion" in the future, but as of now no use has been made for them, Sky have rattled around a few ideas in the past, but nothing has made it to using them yet!
They can be handy for charging your iPod or phone though while watching TV!

Hi Jenni,
For a Sky+ box you can try this:
*Warning* - This procedure wipes all recordings and the Sky+ Planner contents from your box!
1. Turn off the box at the mains.
2. Hold down the left and right buttons on the box.
3. Turn the power back on whilst holding the above buttons down.
4. Now press and release the standby button on the box and keep holding those left and right buttons.
5. The green record circle of lights should now be flashing.
6. Let go of the left and right buttons and press select twice.
7. The green record circle of lights should now start circling anti-clockwise.
8. After a few seconds the Sky+ box should go completely dead.
9. After a few more seconds the red standby light should come back on. Press it and you should automatically go to channel 998 and everything is back to normal.
If you have no joy after this it's a hardware problem I'm afraid, which means your worries of a hefty bill might come true!. But give this a go and get back to me. Just remember that you will lose ALL recordings you have made.
Hello mate, I just Googled this problem and your last point worked perfectly. Thank you very much. It did wipe my saved programmes, but I was never going to watch Brokeback Mountain anyway.

Hi mark thanx for the info on the usb, lmao on charging the ipod such a big company sky is and thats all it can do, im sure someone will come up with something 2 get them going like all usbs. lol it works my usb led light 2.

hi i have a panasonic sky box the red standby light is on but will not turn to green i have done all the suggested methods ie holding down the back up button while turning on but it still will not turn on HELP

Got my father in-law up and running with a grundig sky box and a sky( free to air) card,hes been using it for about 8 months .
Yesterday nothing but a blue screen where sat channels used to be,No light on the front of the de-coder(red standby or green) ,but through the cooling vents I can see a green LED on the circut board inside ,so its getting power.
Have tried two remotes but wont turn on ,I presume its done in but If there was some trick or ke combination I could try Id be grateful.
Father in-law is lost without his chanel 169 so any help would be well recieved

I have an ordinary Pace 2500 box and did as you described above and updated software but still only a red standby light staring back at me.

If you have tried the above and still not getting any joy you are out of luck I'm afraid. With the Pace 2500 they have a common fault that the tuner will go on it, causing it to stay in standby. This can be reapired, but I'm not sure of the price. You could use this as an excuse to get Sky+/HD now! :P
The only other thing I could say is to try and make sure the box is well ventilated and that it's not overheating.

No a software update will not wipe your recordings. There is another option to format your Sky+ box, and this will! But just updating software wont.

I had the above problem with my Sky+ box. The first time, sky tech help took me thro a system update and somekind of reboot by holding some front buttons down whilst powering up. Everything was restored. Tonight the same thing happens and the tech guy takes me thro what I thought was the same procedure, only to find that he's got me to wipe my entire planner.
I'm devastated as he didn't warn me this would happen. Is there anyway of recovering my lost recordings - what about a planner rebuild?

Hi Curlydog,
I'm afraid he did a format this time aswell for some reason, maybe it wasnt booting because your hard drive was corrupt, but sadly once this is done they are gone. The only way would be to take out the hard drive and plug into a computer, then running some recovery software, but even at that it would be messy with license status on the sky box etc. Sorry I couldn't have better news!

Hi David, if there is no power going into the box at all it would be a hardware problem, something is after dying/blowing etc. inside the box, a call to sky tech is in order I'm afraid. They will prob replace the box.

Hi Mark I have seen the posts you have put up previously re taking plug out and putting in again....updating software holding back up button down and putting plug back in but we do not get a message and the box has not come back on. We get an amber and green light next to each other and a red light to the left of the box. Funny thing is we rang sky and they took us through the above steps......suddenly it worked when my son came along to use it. But not today...please help??

My Sky+ box wouldn't switch on today and before chucking it out of the window in annoyance, I tried your tips above re holding the left and right buttons and pressing standby.

ive been trying for the past 2 hours to sort my box out and then came accross the solution posted above. it was a god send and worked perfectly, only lost all the programming from my box but loads better than a hefty bill from sky for fixing it. thank you ever so much. annon.

When I switched my box on this morning it wouldn't let me change channels. I switched it off at the mains and removed the card for 30 seconds as I usually do but instead of it being OK, now when I try and switch it back on all the lights on the front flash on and off quickly.
Can Anyone help?

It could be something as simple as the fuse gone in the plug, or it could be time for an upgrade, how old is the box?

hi i googled why wont my sky box turn on and got on to this site and i would like to thank you for the advice the first one never worked for me but the second one did,so thank you very much for the advice as you saved me buying another box as sky told me the the hard drive was no good and i would have to buy a new box so thank you again. brenda

Hi...Love the site and your advice...I actually fixed my box using your tech know how about 6 months ago when I suffered from the old 'red light and buzzing-will not turn on' syndrome, for the first time.
Now its happened again...luckily I had bookmarked the site....
Thing is Im my wits end because after repeating the same actions (several thousand times), I cant seem to get the green circle of lights to appear. Am at the point of chucking it off the balcony.
Ive got a white sky+ thomson box, which is quite old and its using an old free to air card (with a yellow house outline on it?!)

Yes Ive tried it all. I dont get it. Last time I pressed the direction buttons whilst plugging the machine in and the green lights came on, then I pressed select and it reset and worked a treat. Now its just does nothing....
@Ben,
The only option left to try is to leave the box plugged out for a short while, 5-10 minutes or so! Then try the steps above when plugging it back in, if this brings no life into it I think it could have been on it's last legs last time!
Let me know how it works out for you, in the mean time I will do a bit of browsing and see if I can find any other info that might help!

I was wondering the same thing? I've tried the updating but I'm not sure if its wokring or not
My Sky HD box is staying constantly on Green... I can't switch it from the normal TV to Sky...
The box is responding when I press the sky button as the red light flashes
Is there any way of sorting this without losing all the memory?

Switch off the power supply to your box for 2 minutes,then switch it back on and wait 2 minutes before pressing the SKY on button on your remote.Sometimes certain weather conditions and static can cause SKY boxes to freeze.

Mark. My dad set the sky box not to record programmes as you watch them cos his mate at sky said its like smoking for the sky box. Shortens its life. I found a way to get round this if I remember by pausing a programme at the start for a few seconds then watching it. Anyway, the sky+ box coughed, spluttered and then went into standby mid viewing after I had done this and would not turn back on . I looked up your website to try and fix it. Read most of the posts. Went to try it once more and suddenly it worked, no need for complicated reboots. It all seems fine but earlier this evening I cleared out the planner and am 100% sure I left it on 29% free space. Since turning it back on the planner now recons it has 42% free space but nothing has been deleted. Have I knackered the hard drive? Is there any way to check? I've turned it on and off since but it is still sure it has 42%. I dont want to leave it and then something bad happen.
As for the usb port. Sky could make a fortune selling 'special' branded sky+ usb sticks that you can copy programmes you have recorded on your box onto. Then plug it into another box or usb port and watch it. You could take the football to your mates house or lend granny last nights corrie. It would be amazing. It would be like a more technical version of the original 'copy' function thus making blank tapes even more obselete.

I'd say there was a movie/documentary etc. set to expire in your Anytime T V as you turned on the Sky box, or there was an update downloaded to be installed, its hard to say really. But as long as there is no programmes missing you should be ok!
And I really like your idea with the USB Drive, that really would open up Sky to a whole new level, good thinking!

I have only found this site by googling my problem tonight and it looks great. My sky box just turned to standby whilst half way through a recorded programme and would not turn back on. I had to try the unplug and plug method twice for it to come back on but now it is making a lot of noise.
It is like the hard drive whirring noise but a lot louder (I can hear it now from the next room and it has been on standby for 10 minutes!). Could it just need cleaning out or is it likely to be more serious, I know this sounds like a feeble question but I don't know what is best to do.

This is a pretty simple one to solve, to get life back in your Sky box just plug it out from the mains and plug it back in, wait 30 seconds for the box to wake back up and press the power button, you should be greeted with the welcome channel and you'll be ok from there!
